Welcome Justin Smith from Idaho.
Justin has been waterfowl hunting for about seven years, coincidently just as long on refuges and public land.
The first bird he killed on a refuge was a mallard drake, and it was also his first bird ever shot over decoys.
A big Rat welcome to Justin.
Refuge Determination, Methods, and Success
I simply do whatever it takes to get birds on refuges. Which would include spending the night to get the X, scouting hard, and doing things that others are not doing that I think will help my chances of decoying birds.
The biggest factor is experience - with time you learn how to read birds, know what they like in an area, and know where they go under certain weather conditions, etc. Time in the field is invaluable.
I like hunting public refuges because everyone has access to hunting opportunities. If there were no WMA's, refuges, or public accesses, then I would have no hunting opportunities. Plain and simple.
I primarily hunt puddlers and divers on public land, and once in a while we will pick up a goose. I travel by boat and on foot.
Opening Day Hunt - Magical
My favorite hunt would have to be opening day of the 2004-2005 hunting season.
I had scouted a couple of days before the opener and arrived the day before at our spot and stayed the night. It worked out perfect for us, hardly anyone else around and the birds worked great. I shot my first limit on that hunt. To top it off, we all shot very well which made the hunt that much more memorable. I can still remember this specific hunt like it was yesterday.
One of those special moments the stars, the moon, and the birds all seem to align right over the decoys. Just a magical day in the field.
