You just might be. Have you ever hunted public land or refuges, scouted new areas, or found that perfect spot off the beaten path?
Or possibly you entered waterfowl reservation drawings with high hopes, or kicked rocks in the parking lot while waiting in a sweat line?
Or maybe you dragged yourself out of bed in the dead of the night to make the check station call time, slept in unbelievably awkward positions in your truck, or drank more caffeine to stay awake than a cross-country, tractor-trailer operator?
Or you might have raced your competition to a favorite honey hole, nearly passed out after working up a brutal sweat while hauling a huge load of dekes, or finished setting up your spread seven minutes after the morning shoot time?
But in the end, you had a great day, and can't wait to do it again. And again. And again.
If so, then you are not alone. Welcome to RefugeRat.com™
So where do you start? Your choice. You might check out the Quick Links below. Either way, explore and have fun.

newbie says hi
single reed/ double reed
I use mostly double reeds, doubles to me are just more "Ducky".. Singles are known to be LOUD although you can tighten down on them and get pretty quiet. Singles are used allot in compitition calling.. Those 450 note high balls all come from a single reed.
In a real life hunting situation, a double is on my lanyard. Actualy 2 doubles, a 5 in 1 whistle, and my custom Speck call. The speck call is a hybrid I put together from a Primos shaved reed speck, and a haydel honker Barrel.. Its sweet!
Anyway, Im sure your wench is a double reed. they tend to be very Raspy straight from the factory.
My 8 yr old daughter won the 2009 Jr Duck Calling Contest at the local Snow Goose Festival on a *Timber wench.
Either way, what sounds ducky will usualy draw ducks in. More important is knowing when and how to call.. On pressured refuge birds later in the year, the birds have heard it all. Its these times when I tend to not even touch my calls.
As far as brands go, try them all. I have found that *Sure Shot makes some very ducky doubles and wont break the bank. I also like the Echo timber double. A bit louder, but you can still get it down low, and squeak it.
Both are great calls in my opinion.
Hope this helps.
